Russell Crowe

by Suthin Liptawat

A drug lord smuggles heroin into Harlem during the 1970s by hiding the stash inside the coffins of American soldiers returning from Vietnam.

Above is the plot line of a new movie, American Gangster, starring Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington, directed by Ridley Scott. The release date is set to be November 2, 2007. Crowe and Wasshington had co-starred once before in Crowe's second US movie called Virtuosity(1995). The good guy bad guy roles in these 2 movies are reversed. There is already a prediction that both actors will receive best actor oscar nominations next March for American Gangster. is an Academy Award winning film actor. Born in New Zealand and his family moved to Australia when he was about 4 years old. His family has pursued filming careers in Australia. His mother's godfaher was the producer of Australian TV series Spyforce and Russell Crowe at the age of 5 started his career in acting when he was hired for a line of dialogue in one of the episodes. 's first break came with 2 films which is Romper Stomper in 1992 and The Sum of US in 1994. In Romper Stomper, he became well known in Australia and neighboring countries. He won as best actor on Australian film Institute. While The Sum of Us film lead him to begin doing American films.

When Sharon Stone heard of him in the Romper Stomper he wanted him for her film The Quick and the Dead(1995). After shooting The Sum of us he got his role as gun slinger for Sharon Stone's film. The Quick and the Dead was his first American film.

In 1997, he starred in his third film L.A. Confidential, which is one of my all time favorite. It is a vary complicated movie with so many important characters. I needed to see it 3-4 times to understand and catch all the plot lines. The movie received an Oscar nomination for best movie.

Crowe went on to receive 3 consecutive best actor Oscar nominations for The Insider(1999), Gladiator(2000) and A Beautiful Mind(2001). He won the best Actor for his film Gladiator in 2001. The three films was also nominated for best picture, both the Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind won the award.

In 2005, his second collaboration with director Ron Howard, the Cinderella Man was made. This movie did not achieve box office success, but in my opinion, Crowe deserved another best actor Oscar nomination. His second collaboration with Ridley Scott, A Good Year(2006), also was not a hit but it proved that he can be good in a romantic comedy.

Russel Crowe as a family man married to Australian singer and actress Danielle Spencer on his 39th birthday April 7, 2003. They have two sons Charles Spencer Crowe and Tennyson Spencer Crowe.

So far, I have seen almost all of Russell Crowe's american movies, including Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World(2003) and Proof of Life(2000).

He just finished another movie, 3:10 to Yuma, in which he co-starred with Christian Bale and is set to make a third movie with Ridley Scott, The Sherriff of Nottingham. He will play the sheriff of Nottingham, the nemesis of Robin Hood.

There is already a prediction that both actors will receive best actor Oscar nominations next March.
